Blood Countess [Catacombs]

So for a quick summary of yesterday - I went from Prague to Bratislava on the train and found my hostel. I found a nearby pub for tea. A small meal, desert, two pints, and a cocktail cost me €18 - about $27!

This is a really nice one,
they have tanks of it in the pub

Now, for the exciting part. Today I took a couple of trains to Višnové, without too much trouble. My day was to be spent visiting Cachtice Castle, the seat of infamous Countess Elizabeth Bathory. When I got off at the station, I was worried I wouldn't know where to go, as my map didn't have street names and there were about four nearby mountains. Then I looked at the mountains...

It was rather obvious which one I had to climb
So after walking down the road too far and missing my turnoff, I doubled back, found the right track, and started walking... and walking...

Such a fun looking track

This doesn't show how steep it was
It was...very steep

It final evened out, and I had my first mountaintop glimpse.

Such beauty!
I grew deeper in awe the closer I walked.

The oldest parts of the castle are 13th century

I bought my ticket in to look inside the castle, and I had a guide show me around (once again, just me).

I think this was a battlement, from the middle castle

Such a lovely view

These catacombs led down to the town -
Elizabeth used them to escape if necessary

The chapel from the upper castle

This next picture has a lot of significance. Through that hole is a prison made by Countess Bathory. This is where she tortured a lot of her victims. The room I stood in to take the photo was a meeting room. Covering the hole was some piece of furniture. If someone in the prison cried for help to the people in the meeting room, Elizabeth would say it was nothing, kill the prisoner, then kill her family, too (apparently).

Note the shape of the hole - an hourglass figure

A beautiful view of the township from the upper castle

I can see the path I walked along from here
(it disappears into the left)

Atop the upper castle

Next to the Black Tower where Elizabeth died

I got to see all this!

With the chapel behind me
I found a European spider with seven legs!

So happy I could come up here!
This is what I climbed for my incredible views

The upper castle, and parts of the middle castle

So lucious and green

I walked through that arch to enter the castle

Amazing windows

Gorgeous architecture

Poppies!

Ruined, but beautiful

Crenulations!

Middle castle, I think
You can see some of the reconstruction to the right

Just amazing

What a view
(I left the wrong way and had to walk back towards the castle
to find my walking track)

Astounding

A hard goodbye

This isn't so scary going down

The view from near the station

Majestic

No wonder they wanted them on mountains -
so everyone can revel in their splendour

I learned a lot today, about the Countess, the castle, and the Hungarian Empire. I had a ball.
A more convoluted way back, and now preparations begin for leaving tomorrow. Goodbye, Slovakia!

Far From The Fame [Sabaton]

Yesterday I went for a walk, going through Old Town to the Jewish quarter. I got lost on the way, but I found a lolly shop!

Yes, I bought lollies. Lots of lollies...

As I wandered around, I found a Bohemian specialty.

Like a doughnut/pastry thing - very nice
They were cooking on rods over coals

I saw the astronomical clock in the Old Town square, and I saw it on the hour - they're right, it is disappointing.

Turns out you can't see what happens from this angle

The most important thing I did today (hence the blog title) was finding the plaque for Karl Janoušek.

I was very excited to find this

I wandered around trying to get to Lesser Town, got lost...

There's ivy on everything in Europe

I got bored with getting lost so I went back to the hostel. I walked over the Charles Bridge - I won't make that mistake again! So many people walking so slowly, so if you're using the bridge to get somewhere in a hurry, you will be stuck. But the bridge was lovely - covered in stalls and statues.

The view from the bridge looking... south?
Couldn't get a photo without people in it

No idea what this represents

Looking... west? towards Lesser Town

Black angels
Looking back towards Charles Bridge
I had a lazy night in preparation for leaving this morning. Next time you'll hear from me, I'll be in Slovakia!

Drink 'Til We Die [Lagerstein]

Morning (or afternoon) post because I got back late last night (or early this morning). Well, Thursday I had a lazy day (I still can't shake this cold) went for a couple of short walks in Prague and admired the buildings.

This guy was just hanging out waiting for
Mary Poppins

Czech flies are bigger than in Australia...

Yesterday I did a walking tour of Prague. Here come the photos.

I liked this clock

This is the New Town Hall
Protestants threw Catholics out of the windows that are
now barred - it's the first floor
Other Protestants staked the life out of those who
hit the ground and didn't die

I don't know what this was, but I like it

Just beautiful

The Powder Tower, and entrance to Old Town

The angels have gold wings!

A statue to the guy who brought Protestantism to Prague

The originally Protestant, now Catholic, church
peering out from behind the buildings

Some guys having fun at the top there

Looking at Prague Castle

The recital hall

I learnt a lot about Prague and the Czech Republic's history, and our guide was really good. I saw a lot on the walk back to the hostel.

More guys on a building

Another gorgeous tower
The entrance to Charles Bridge

A swan and fairly grown up cygnets

Just for you, Mum - bridge photo
There are trams crossing it

So green!

A mosaic at the top of the building
Then I did a Segway tour, and I was the only one on the tour!

Beautiful views

Cathedral!

I managed to balance on the Segway

This is Lesser Town, the oldest part of Prague

The oldest pub in Prague - from the Middle Ages

I had a pizza for tea and only ate half - I was proud of my efforts.

Massive, massive pizza

My tour guide was a bit of a metalhead, and recommended a metal pub to me - I managed to find it. I got there about 8:30pm.

Hell's Bell's - Prague's underground metal pub
It was in a basement, and very cool. I left around 2:30am, so I had an awesome time.

This is Prague at 3am - my camera doesn't like the dark
I got back around 3:30am because I got lost a lot.

Well, it's my last afternoon here so I'm off to explore!
